are we sending the right message

The school had a camp on the school ground last weekend. What I want to highlight from this event is the appreciation given to the students.
I guess there's nothing wrong with giving each and everyone of them a gift after the camp is over to cheer everybody after a tiring night stay at school, just that I am not in the favour of how the gifts were given. 3 competitions were organized during the camp. There were six groups of students and the head committee insisted that each group was awarded with two prizes, that means they have to be one of the three main winners in two competitions. 3 competitions were not enough to realize the idea, thus an award of The Most Disciplined Team was included. The award wasn't given because the students were really disciplined. Believe me, it was just to fill in some voids. The groups which 'won' this category didn't win the 3 main competitions. And, it was obvious which group had done well and which ones didn't. The students know if they could or could not win.
I have nothing against giving joy to others, just that I don't find in falsely making everybody a winner to spread this joy. If everybody were meant to be given something as a token of appreciation, those token could be given as a door gift and not a prize. Let those who are capable be appreciated with prizes.
This culture has been practiced for a long, long time here. It's time for some enlightment.
