A few words about last semester's Environmental Education subject

Environmental Education is indeed a beneficial subject because especially now that we are facing a lot of environmental issues mainly caused by the lack of awareness amongst Malaysians.
I believed that I have to do especially a lot of field work to fulfil the needs of the subject. I might have to study the ecosystem and might even have to select an environmental issue that is significantly problematical in the state of Melaka and study how to counteract it, be it short term or long term. I thought this subject could be very challenging and more challenging than the others because there are actually so much about Mother Nature that I have yet to discover. Adding to the challenge is my future undertaking as a teacher to educate and make children aware of how important it is right now and in the future for us to take a very good care of the planet.
As the course was undertaken, I found it to be a little more relaxed. Miss G. Boovaneswary as the lecturer has carried out the class at a slow but helpful pace. There were not much field work done and certainly not much textbook reading required, but students were always reminded to be aware of the arising crises through mass media. Television news, newspapers, and periodicals were highlighted as reliable resources in identifying and discussing environmental issues. As for field trips experience, I will never forget the Irresistible Journey to Endau-Rompin National Park last March 2005. Picture the country is still in the greens 200 million years of age. It felt like heaven to just sip the water of the rivers whenever I wanted back there. It could be of more use if we focused at a nearby or smaller spot of the National Park, and really learn how to deliver the appreciation to children when we as teachers later in the future take them to such a spot.
The course provided me with some concept and experience on especially how to educate children to value the earth we live on. Small scale field trips, such as studying the flora and fauna in the school could be practised before jumping into bigger scales ones, such as studying the environmental issues significant at certain time at certain place. Environmental Education if practised in classes like other subjects could as well be carried out like the others, just that it should be more open to discussions because environment is not textbook based. Although Environmental Education is not wholly an independent subject, a teacher has to always relate learning to the importance of keeping the planet in its natural balance. When children have such awareness, hopefully they will continue caring the wellness of the planet. They will never litter and will not blame the municipal service for not providing trash cans, but instead throw the rubbish into a waste bin when they see one. I really hope to see my children adopt such a conscience.
